If your dog hasn't
already been spayed or neutered you may be asking the question whether it
should be. In most cases, the answer is yes.
If your dog is a show dog that you intend to use for breeding then,
obviously, you wouldn't alter them, but for the average household pet, it
is the right call for several reasons.
Spaying a female dog before she is 6 months not only eliminates the chance
of uterine and ovarian cancer but it also significantly reduces the risk
of mammary cancer. It also reduces the problem of stray male dogs being
attracted, the need to confine her when she is in heat and the problems of
unwanted puppies.
Neutering a male dog eliminates testicular cancer and reduces the chance
of prostate disease. It also makes the dog less aggressive, less likely to
roam and more gentle overall.
Altering not only helps a dog live a healthier life, it also is critical
to reducing the current problems of pet overpopulation.
