Adding a second dog
into your household can be very disconcerting to your first dog. He will
generally get less attention from you which may cause jealousy and he may
get confused about his status in the pack. Dogs by nature need to know
where they stand in the pecking order to be comfortable and to know how to
respond to certain situations.
Help keep the proper pecking order and balance by giving as much or more
attention to the older dog as you do the new dog.
Respect the older dogs role as the elder statesmen by feeding the him
first and giving him treats and toys first.
Teach them to take turns by saying their name before you give them
anything so they learn to hear their name before taking an item.
If a dog gets to o pushy or rowdy, give them a time out alone for a few
minutes. This helps remind them that you are the top dog and they need to
submit to your guidance.
When no one is around to supervise, keep them separated until their
relationship is fully established and stable.
